28 Reasons I Loved 28!

on January 20, 2012December 13, 2015 By Jenn Winter 1 Comment

My 28th year has come to and end, and what a year it was!  It started in my second country, Kenya, with Irene, Faith and David visiting the members of Giwa IDP Camp, going on a mini-safari and giving out shoes to the Dust Babies of Kikopey.  At 28 I became an Aunt and helped to [...]

Unplugged Travel

on January 3, 2012January 3, 2012 By Jenn Winter

It's this time of year that I am able to catch up on the 40 or so travel magazines that have formed various piles around my apartment.  National Geographic Traveler, Afar, Travel and Leisure... to quote a good friend, it's like my porn.  But I do more than just look at the pictures, I actually [...]

Realizing my Potential

on May 23, 2011December 13, 2015 By Jenn Winter 3 Comments

For the past six weeks, I have been reflecting a great deal on the remarkable life of Sylvia "Sunny" Moore and the impact that she had on my own. I learned of Sunny's death as I was busy preparing for a 3 week trek in South America.  As I was folding trip scarves and placing [...]

In A Better World

on February 9, 2011February 9, 2011 By Jenn Winter

So, it turns out that the Dust Babies are famous and will be seen around the world. Sort of. The movie that was filmed at Mbaruku IDP Camp during my time there in 2009 is actually a big deal.  It's a Danish film called In A Better World and it tells the story of a [...]

Quote of the Day

on October 25, 2010October 25, 2010 By Jenn Winter

From my iGoogle homepage today: "Coming home from very lonely places, all of us go a little mad: whether from great personal success, or just an all-night drive, we are the sole survivors of a world no one else has ever seen."  - John le Carre

My 2L

on October 15, 2010October 15, 2010 By Jenn Winter 2 Comments

Today is Blog Action Day and the topic is one of my favorites. Water. "Can I start you off with something to drink, Miss?" "I'm fine with water, thanks." Yep, I'm that girl.  Why would I order a sugary soda for $3.95 when I can cleanse my body of toxins and have unlimited free refills?. [...]

RS CVX 2010

on August 26, 2010August 26, 2010 By Jenn Winter 2 Comments

"There are four bedrooms," my mom's excited voice rang through the speakerphone as we headed north in the Jetta, "so you girls can each have your own room!" Kelli's face fell a bit as she looked at me.  "Mom," I called out, "we might just drag an air mattress into the yellow room and all [...]

The Value of a Shilling

on September 27, 2009May 13, 2010 By Jenn Winter

Just an observation that Nikki and I were discussing last night - what is the value of a shilling? Mathematically speaking, at the moment about 75 ksh (Kenyan shillings) equal $1 but, unless you're trying to figure out how much money you have in your bank account, that's irrelevant. 400 ksh - A taxi ride [...]
